Routine dental cleanings are critically important to maintaining good oral health. Professional cleanings can help prevent plaque buildup, tooth decay, and other dental problems. Our hygienist is specially trained to help you maintain those hard-to-reach areas that even the most meticulous brusher and flosser can miss! Every patient’s situation is unique, but most people should schedule a dental cleaning appointment every six months, during which Dr. Bostian will also perform a thorough oral examination to ensure the teeth and gums are in good health.
Life can be stressful, and lots of us take out that stress on our teeth, especially in our sleep! Our Chapel Hill office creates custom-fit night guards, also known as occlusal guards or mouth guards. These guards protect your teeth from the wear and tear caused by clenching and grinding. They can also help relieve jaw soreness and tension in some cases. For patients who play sports, we recommend wearing a mouth guard to prevent tooth trauma. We offer custom-made mouth guards to help protect the teeth during these activities; however, should an accident occur, Dr. Bostian can also help provide the most appropriate treatment to repair or replace the damaged teeth.
We use advanced dental x-ray technology to provide the best and safest service to our patients. The digital images are produced with an extremely small amount of radiation and can be viewed immediately on a computer screen. These images can also be enlarged and enhanced, allowing Dr. Bostian to identify and address areas of concern in the early stages of their progression. This allows us to provide more conservative dentistry than was previously possible.
Fluoride has been well-researched for decades and is proven to be an important mineral that absorbs into and strengthens tooth enamel, which helps to prevent tooth decay and tooth sensitivity. Fluoride is important for both children and adults. Professionally applied fluoride varnish provides a high concentration of fluoride directly to the teeth and can benefit those who are prone to cavities, have had extensive dental treatment, or have sensitive teeth.
We provide oral cancer screenings as part of our routine oral examinations. Using magnified glasses and an extremely bright light, Dr. Bostian will check all the places in your mouth that you may not be able to see on your own, including the insides of your cheeks, your gums, your tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat. The goal is to detect any abnormal areas in the mouth that should be further investigated.
Sealants are typically recommended for children (or adults with deep grooves) when the adult molars erupt into their mouths. The sealants are painted onto the deep grooves in the chewing surfaces of the teeth, and help prevent plaque and bacteria from settling into these hard-to-clean areas. They have been proven to be very effective at preventing cavities! Ask Dr. Bostian if sealants are right for you or your children.
